Five Things That Insurance Agents Must Remember To Stay In Their Job

Being an insurance agent is not easy. Sure it looks easy when they come in fully dressed in their business attire, totally glammed up, and looking sunny all the time. But insurance agents don’t have it the easy way all day and all the time. Selling something intangible is highly challenging and difficult especially in a world where “seeing is believing” is highly the norm.

Though many people attempt to be in the field, only a few really last. This is because of the hardships they have encountered, the rejections they needed to accept gracefully, the monthly productivity pressure, plus the personal resources that they ought to have to fuel their career. So, the next time you see a perfectly fine insurance agent, remember the agony of them faking it until making it.

But as much as the job of being an insurance agent can be thankless, we have to remember that we are here for a reason. So should any of us feel down, here are a few reminders to keep us up.

  • We have advocacy to fulfill.  We are here for a reason. Usually, it is to help other people protect themselves, to inform others of the options they have, to help children finish school, to assist widows with the household expenses, or to help seniors retire comfortably. Whatever that reason is, if it was enough to get us started, it should be enough to get us going.
  • We have families to protect.  Think of all the families that were entrusted to us. As an agent, we don’t just serve our clients, we serve their families, who need us when our clients have already moved on. We cannot simply let them down just because we feel down. We have to remember that we can also be that child, that widow, or that orphan. So, every opportunity that we get to help, we must grab. As an agent, we are that ‘opportunity’, we should not lose it.
  • We have clients who trusted us. Our clients have given us not just their money but their trust as well. They had faith in us when we told them that they will always have our back should anything happen. So we cannot simply take a step back now. Or else, they will not only lose the trust they have given us, they might potentially stop believing in the entire system and industry, as well.
  • You have more people to reach and help. There are still millions of people out there who are not protected. The world needs more insurance agents to reach out to them. If we quit now, what will happen to them? For sure, eventually, someone will fill in our shoes. But what if “eventually” comes too late. That is why, instead of being discouraged with every “no” we get, why don’t we look forward instead to the more “yes’s” to come?
  • Negativity is temporary. Feelings of disappointment, failure, and weariness are all momentary. Once we get out of our wilderness, we will see that there is really more to what our negative feelings are trying to tell us. The world does not end when we have bad days, it ends when we have bad attitudes and bad resolutions to temporary frustrations.

Being an insurance agent may be simple but it is not easy. It takes a really strong man or woman to be one. So whenever you feel down, remember that you are that man or woman and now is not the time to back down.
